School systems are required by law to implement 504 plans, and some schools truly honor the plans. But some schools only implement what they consider reasonable in the 504 plan and ignore the rest of it. From personal experience, my son's plan was honored for a short time and then the school found it too demanding and stopped implementing it over time. I would go to the school and have a conference with the teacher and principal, and things would be okay for awhile, but the school would let it slide until I went back to the school.

My son became traumatized by the lack of implementing his plan, and his anxiety got much worse, to the point that every day was a battle to get him to go to school. I was exhausted, we were in counseling every week, he was on a boat-load of medication and seeing the psychiatrist at least monthly. When they called and told me to withdraw him from school or he would be expelled, I made up my mind that we were going to home-school.
